Got Georgia on your mind? Many of us do!

In fact, it was just announced Georgia has broken tourism records yet again.

Of course, the main getaways we all desire are the bustling city of Atlanta, followed by the timeless southern bell of Savannah, depending on your vibe.

Atlanta has made many headlines as of late as one of the cheapest city breaks in the U.S., while Savannah has long been a staple for those preferring ‘southern hospitality’ and quintessential small town charm.

As such, you’re all but alone when visiting Savannah, where you’ll be sharing photo-ops with tourists from numerous postcard-worthy historic homes to scenic parks and old-timey streets.

But there’s one Georgia city just north of Atlanta that’s super easy to reach yet often overlooked.

The lovely town of Marietta boasts all the charm of Savannah but without the crowds!

There are many fascinating facets to Atlanta, but as we all known with any big city comes travel frustrations.

One of the most common headaches for Atlanta tourists is the ongoing traffic!

That’s okay, though. All you gotta do is take the exit marked “Marietta,” and your problem is solved!

On a good day, Marietta is less than half an hour from the ATL, which explains why this hidden gem has been overshadowed by the allure of Atlanta.

Conversely, Savannah is nearly a 4-hour drive as it’s located along the coast, making Marietta much easier to reach from one of America’s busiest hubs, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Marietta may not have a towering skyline, professional sports teams, or the World of Coca-Cola (yes, it’s a real place!), but that’s all part of what makes this delightful town more enticing to visit.

Explore The Charm Of Downtown

Many places across the South ooze small town charm with historic buildings, boutique shops, and old school diners.

Check, check, and check for all of the above in Marietta.

What makes visiting downtown here special, however, is the bustling ‘Square’, which locals and travelers in the know flock to for a good time day and night.

In fact, the town’s motto is ‘Meet me on the square’. When the town is buzzing with action, in all likelihood, it started in Marietta Square.

Surrounded by great eats, plentiful shopping, a quaint park, and even the Museum of History, Marietta can be your main stay or day trip away from Atlanta’s hustle and bustle all while showcasing a similar charm you’d find in Savannah.

Boasting southern hospitality and beautiful architecture, you’ll forget all about Savannah’s crowds while you mingle with the locals.

One of the most popular times to visit is during the artisan and farmers markets held at the Square each week, but upcoming events Chalktoberfest and Fall Festival of Fun are surely circled on many calendars.

Of course, it wouldn’t be a visit to the South without indulging in some savory eats! Nearby Marietta Square Market is home to over a dozen restaurants and bars whipping up a huge variety of cuisines from Korean, wood-fired pizza, to Jamaican.

Tip: For the best Southern cookin’, check out highly touted The Marietta Local just off the Square, serving up classics like Fried Chicken and Collard Greens.

You may be mesmerized by Marietta’s hometown feel, but don’t forget to explore the outskirts!

As leaf-peepers begin wandering in droves in search of the perfect fall photo-ops, Marietta is among the South’s best-kept secrets to roam the outdoors.

There are ample scenic hiking trails at your fingertips, especially through Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park boasting sweeping colorful views as well as Chattahoochee Nature Center – you know, way down yonder.

Except this time of year, it’s not hotter than hoochie coochie.
